So broke

Anyone who is broke or lives pay check to pay check will enjoy this post....soooo here's another day of
Living in Ashes
I think it’s safe to say that everyone and their mother is piss broke: no vacations, no shopping, no sushi, and no sporting events. Our generation’s definition of broke is a tad bit different than the average grandparent, and can be closely linked to the phrase “living without.” Living on your own can be costly and even the smallest things add up.

via
I am not exaggerating nor lying when I say I am the cheapest of the cheap. Whenever my BF and I see something we need or want at like Target, before I can even say it he goes “Oh but we can get it at the dollar store.” BUT IT’S TRUE! You really can find extraordinary things there, same goes for Big Lots. Now I am sure there are tons of students or young adults living alone and piss broke, but I know quite a few who fear “cheapy” stores and avoid them at all costs.

via
Getting to my main point, the other day I rendered the consequences of buying & using cheap shaving cream. It was awful, just awful. This has happened before with other cheap items but I always over looked them, hoping it was the last time.

via
My cheapest ways have gotten the best of me & after two years of this insanity I have determined that there are just some items you can NOT buy cheap.

1. Can Openers. 2 can openers from the dollar store and 1 from big lots; all 3 failed to open my cans and wasted my time. Do not buy a can opener less than $7.
via

2. Travel Mugs. The lid is almost never on and you can forget washing it because the part on the cup that helps keep it warm falls off. I bought 2 travelers for $4 total (I know I’m cheap). Bottom line, unless it’s at a higher status store on sale, do not buy travelers for less than $5 PER TRAVELER.
via

3. Wine Openers. If you’re a wino, you know how tragic this was. No $1 wine openers people.

4. Shaving Cream. Trust me; spend the extra $6 on brand name shaving cream and even razors....thanks sissy!

via

5. Dishes. These will last you a day. $8 for 8 dishes really is too good to be true.

via

6. Adhesive Wall Hooks. Because they will never ever ever hold anything and you will end up scraping the adhesive off because they are so shitty. Buy these at hardware stores or Wal-Mart etc.

via

7. Wrapping Paper. Unless you want rips all over the gift, opt for paying the extra $8 and avoid hating the holidays.

via

Despite these losses, there are a few items we can pick up for CHEAP that work.

8.  Cell Phone Chargers. You can buy a car charger or wall charger for no more than $10, which is extremely cheaper than any retail store. I have bought numerous car chargers for different model phones and they have never failed.

via

9. Animal Toys. Big lots have the best selection for cheap animal accessories and toys. They are reliable and a good deal compared to places like Pet Co.

via

If you really are on a tight budget, buying these items at the dollar store will help you save: school supplies, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, Tupperware, soap, blank CDs, calendars, toothpaste, etc. If an item that is usually very expensive, that is being sold for very cheap, it’s usually too good to be true. Don’t feel guilty for spending a little more; it will save you in the long run.

The Dollah Hollah store carries my fav go-to Cover Girl eye shadow - "my people" Not to MENTION, you don't have to fight a crowd in a Dollar Tree...have you ever been to a FAMILY DOLLAR? I could just wander those ailes forever and ever amen. Think "Costco for thrifters" xo

You are so right. There are some items you can save on, but many times you get what you pay for! If only we could all have money trees :) xoxo, morgan

This is fantastic! I never even thought of big lots for dog toys! But sadly you are so right when it comes to razors and shaving cream. Cutup pits is just one thing I can NOT handle!

Amen to no Dollar Store wrapping paper... your gift may be cheap but it doesn't have to look so!

LOVE!! There are things you can totally go cheap on.. but I totally agree with the wall hooks and wrapping paper- there are just some things that the dollar store has not mastered!

Thanks for visiting my blog! One thing I would add to this list is REAL CHEESE! As soon as my husband finished school and got a full time job, I told him I would never buy fake cheese again!

I love going into stores like big lots and the dollar store just to see if I can find something at a steal, but I agree with you there are some items that you just can't find at the dollar store. I also look for scrapbooking supplies at big lots, youo can find pretty items for cheap prices.

I'm glad you found my blog, which led me to yours because it's fabulous! Target is a trap for your money! I went there today to get a quick lunch and walked out with $62 worth of things!! Why does it have to be so wonderful?! I agree with you though, the DG and Big Lots have great finds sometimes :)

you can find almost everything very cheap these days, you just have to know where to search. I'm the same in that, I can't spend 20 euro's on something, when I know I can probably find it for 10 somewhere. Call me cheap ;-)

I love this post. I'm a big proponent of "you get waht you pay for!" I've made the mistake of buying cheap stuff only to realize it's not stuff...it's SH!T! Thanks for validating that some things are worth the extra few dollars. LONG LIVE TARGET!

I just found your blog through a friend's site and think it's super cute. I'm a new GFC follower.

Kelly, see instead of using shaving cream use cheap conditioner!! It works just as well but costs so much less!! Totally agree with the rest of you items - cheap corkscrews are terrible and phone chargers from Poundland (UK equivalent) never work!! Love this post :)

I love this post. I am all about "you get what you pay for!" Haha. My husband likes to buy things as cheap as they get. He will even buy $3 dollar shampoo at Safeway and the cheapest toilet paper possible. I just can't bring myself to those levels! Haha I've noticed that it really makes a difference when you spend the extra bucks on something, it's priced higher for a reason!
Your post was so cute. Also, I love your blog and I am a new follower. :) I am going to put your button up on my page! :)

Love this post.. you definitely get what you pay for! I love the dollar store for sponges, plastic plates/cups/decorations for parties, glass candle holders, and mostly 1-time use stuff. I've definitely had horrible experience with dollar store wrapping paper too, but the gift bags and greeting cards are awesome and way better than spending $5 on just one.
