So, you’re moving abroad. There are lots to get sorted over
there; whether it’s finding accommodation, sorting out a job, sorting out
schools, getting furniture shipped over, opening a bank account, the list goes
on. However, while there are things you need to set up before you arrive so
that it all goes smoothly, there’s also a lot of things you need to tie up at
home before you go. With so much on your mind, some of these things can easily
be forgotten, so check out this list of seven things you need to make sure you
do before you go.
Cancel Any Memberships
You don’t want to start your new life and still be paying
for your old one. So, if you have a phone contract, then you need to cancel it
as soon as you know that you’re moving away so that you can give them some
notice. Also, don’t take an upgrade on your phone, even if you are eligible,
you need to cut ties as soon as you can. Then there’s your gym membership, your
magazine subscriptions, and any other monthly fees you have. Have a look at
your bank statements and direct debits to see what you are getting charged
monthly for your TV license, your Sky package, your Internet. You may be able
to keep Netflix, but you might
need a VPN so that the Internet thinks you are in your home country – if not,
cancel and get a new membership in the country you’re moving to.
Re-route Your Mail
You don’t want to miss any vital mail, but when you are
moving abroad, you can’t just get it re-routed to your new house. So you could
either get it sent to a friend’s house to save for when you’re back, send it to
you, or open for you. Alternatively, you could go on physicaladdress.com and get a virtual address, so you don’t miss a thing.
Go For A Check-Up
Make sure you book all of your health appointments before
you leave and go to them. It’s essential to get your eyes checked, your teeth,
a physical from the doctor, and if you’re a woman, then make sure you have birth control for the next year. Of course, there should hopefully be healthcare where you’re
moving too, and it might even be better than what you’re used to, but it’s good
to know you’re going in top condition and you then have time to find a doctor
and a dentist once you have moved.
Get Travel Insurance
Make sure you’re covered until you’re settled in your job,
and you know what company benefits you’re getting as you should get insurance
through them, but you’ll need to check.
Buy back-ups of your favorites
Your cosmetics, any toiletries, and shampoo, and don’t
forget any of your favorite food that you won’t be able to get, which you’re there. Check online
before you go and make sure you have a good stock so that you don’t run
short.
Change Your Car Insurance
Car Insurance will need to change you sell your car. Even if your vehicle is
parked in a garage unused, you need to insure it.
Flying and Moving Pets
If you’ve got pets, then you need to find out about moving
them and how you can do it. Is your pet allowed into the country your moving
to?
