The Big Wants In Life: Looking After Your Health & Happiness As You Age In An Uncertain World

via

One of the biggest things that we all think about is getting older.  With that said, if you want to feel good about yourself as you get older you have to focus on your health as well as your happiness. And it seems that in this uncertain world that our happiness can certainly take a nosedive. Not only this, but we have to consider other aspects of our lives that are taking priority. You may have to work a lot or you may have to dedicate a lot of yourself to other aspects of your life and not have enough time for yourself. So with these things in mind, how can you learn to look after your health and your happiness as you get older?

Prioritizing Your Abilities To Function
We can spend a lot of time struggling to keep afloat in a physical and emotional sense and this is especially true in the work environment. If we spend so much of our time dedicating ourselves to other people and this is to the detriment of our health we will only get weaker over time. So what is the answer? Partly it can be to do with implementing wellness schemes in your working environment such as vision insurance benefits or taking the opportunity to focus more on yourself. When you work in a company that doesn't take the health of its employees seriously you've got a problem on your hands. So you can either choose to plod along as you already have done or you can take matters into your own hands. Learning how to function to the best of your abilities in a mental and physical sense can be about changing your lifestyle and your diet but it can also be about learning to work to your strengths. It goes back to that work-life balance. If you feel that your mental capacities are diminishing because you're not able to get the balance right it's time to start thinking about moving somewhere that can give you what you need.

Realizing What Is Important Now So You Can Enjoy It
Throughout our twenties and thirties, we sweat the small stuff. If we can learn the important lesson of realizing what is important in life we can focus on this and not worry about what is on the other side of the fence. A lot of people can think that the grass is greener on the other side so they just need to go for it. But what happens? When they get there they end up having to find the next challenge. Is this really what life is about? Or is it actually about making the most of what you have? Only you know the answer to it. But if you can start to realize what's important in your life now you can make the most of the small moments and enjoy life in general. One of the big regrets of people, when they are towards the end of their life, is that they didn't stop and savor those small moments. Because we live in an age where we are constantly focused on how we promote ourselves on social media or are looking for the next challenge, whether it's in terms of our career or our personal best, that we never can sit still. Learning to sit still and almost think of nothing is a perfectly wonderful approach to living life. This is why people meditate!

The Importance Of Routines In Mind And Body
As humans, we need to stick to routines. This is why we can fall by the wayside if we aren’t given structure. There's a lot to be said for the working week as a way to structure our lives but when we are giving so much of our time to an employer for nothing in return we need to start implementing routines that benefit us. And these routines are incredibly simple. Looking after your mind can be is something as simple as incorporating breathing exercises or meditation first thing in the morning and at the end of the night. In order to do this effectively, it takes a long time to practice it. And the same applies to physical exercise. You don't need to hit the gym five nights a week in order to feel the benefits. This is one of the biggest myths of the modern world. Our bodies are extremely resilient and we have to remember that if we are looking to get stronger that we give our body a stimulus so that the cells are forced to encourage muscle growth. This is biochemistry 101. And with these two prongs in mind, we can completely overhaul our mental and physical health. Learning to incorporate these into a routine that doesn't particularly last long can have wide-ranging impacts on our outlook.

These things are incredibly simple but we can spend a lot of time overlooking simplicity for some deep and complex answer. As we get older we may start to think about things like the meaning of life but if the meaning of life is all about being who you are and living day to day then it's crucial to get back in touch with who you are. We spend a lot of time looking for the next thing. And as we get older we could very well get itchy feet and think that there's got to be something more to it. But as we progress in age this is when things start to become simpler. A lot of people get happier as they get older because they start to see the light. And with this in mind, if you want to start getting happier sooner perhaps we can take a leaf out of their book and start to not sweat the small stuff but also begin to pare our lives down to the bare essentials. It isn't particularly complex to get healthier and happier but it's about understanding what you want out of life and just going for it!
